Talking about the game of golf, Essien said: “Anything that goes wrong is still your mistake, you are the one playing so you cannot blame your caddy or anyone for the mistake you made.” She said she started playing golf after seeing a young white boy playing at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja. Essien, who was excited watching the white boy playing golf, was asked by her father if she wanted to play.
She said: “He asked me if I wanted to play and I said yes, so he bought me clubs and got me a golf professional to train me.” Essien was said to have got her first medal at the age of five. She has participated in tournaments in three continents and she currently has 17 medals.
Speaking of his daughter, Essien’s father, Eyo Essien, said: “She still has some room for growth and I think as I said by the age of 15 she will be ripe, you know, to take the golf world by storm.” The 13-year-old golfer said: “In the next 10 years with a degree in my hand, I will play as a professional golfer.”
