Catholic Bishops task President Buhari on state of insecurity in Nigeria.
President Buhari continues to be subjected to intense criticisms as a result of the worrying insecurity situation in the country – Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province have called on the president to address the situation – The revered Bishops tasked the president in a communiqué signed and issued by the president of the province and Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province have charged President Muhammadu Buhari and others in the position of authority to address the insecurity situation in the country. The Bishops specifically urged the president to“wake up and do more than pay mere lip service to the issue of security in Nigeria.” The Bishops tasked the president in a communiqué signed and issued by the president of the province and Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin after a meeting held at the Jubilee Conference Centre, Oke-Ado, Ibadan between Monday, February 3 and Tuesday, February 4.
The communiqué lamented the insecurity in the country and noted that the country is clearly drifting. The revered Bishops stated that with the way things are going in the country, human life seems to have lost value in Nigeria. “Things have become much worse. Nigeria is in security dire-straits. Only a few Nigerians in any part of the country can sleep with two eyes closed. “Nigerians are being slaughtered daily by terrorists, criminals and so-called herdsmen on the roads, in their farms and even in their homes. “With the security architecture in Nigeria seemingly on auto-pilot, the country is clearly drifting and needs decisive action to restore professionalism and effectiveness,” part of the communique read. Some Nigerians have taken to social media to express their concerns of the spate of insecurity in the country.

Peter Obi, former Anambra governor wrote on Twitter: The state of insecurity under this administration is the worst the country has ever experienced. To address it, we need to look at the economy and focus on reversing the loss of jobs, among other solutions.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has set up a committee to periodically review the security situation in the country. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, revealed this after he met with the president alongside Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan. Gbajabiamila told State House correspondents that the committee members are expected to be drawn from the executive, legislature and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In a related development, Senator Elisha Abbo representing Adamawa North senatorial district called for the sack of the service chiefs during plenary on Wednesday, January 29 while contributing to a motion on insecurity. The People’s Democratic Party senator said his country home has been attacked by insurgents nine times in three months.
Senator Abbo lamented that despite the N4.5trillion naira budgeted for security agencies in the last four years, the security situation has not improved, but has instead gotten worse.
